One thing I never thought would come in handy was the fact that I attended law school in Louisiana, the only state in the Union that is not a common law, English based system. They go by a Civil Code based on the Napoleonic Code of 1804. Took courses in some of that in law school. When dealing with clients with backgrounds in Spain or Continental Europe, I find it interesting how these people knew the probate process - there it's called succession, takes years and the government all the time is getting tax. Fantastic to be able to show people how the different English-American system can work to their advantage, save tax dollars and be far speedier.
