It is very interesting that several of my clients have tried it themselves by going to Legal Zoom-type sites to pay money to try to draft wills or other instruments for themselves.
It is enlightening to find that in all the cases where people did that, their money was not well spent, the documents flawed, and new instruments necessary.
It is not worth going to sites that probably base their forms on states other than Massachusetts. There are distinctions usually in every state (a device no doubt initiated by attorneys) that make it difficult for some pre-set form to provide what you're hoping to do.
Our staff research has disclosed many attorneys posting prices of $2,000 and more for wills, health care proxies, etc. The office doesn't boast of its reduced prices, but it's interesting that our "competition" is now the internet and do-it-yourself sites.
We cost more than $100 (Legal Zoom), but are very flexible to the person, his/her need and situation in setting prices. We're here to serve, not to exploit.
The key is experience and the knowledge gained. This office remembers when it was thought folk wisdom that if you do a person's will, you have a client for life. Not anymore. Now you're just the person who drafted their last will. I remember one close friend of my mother that used 2 attorneys to draft three subsequent wills. That is why we recommend you call, meet with us, and let us prove our worth to get you thinking you have an attorney for life. We're there to help you.
